Throughout history, the natural world has provided both the inspiration and the subject matter for artists. The contemporary artists included in Nature Distilled also turn to elements found in nature for their imagery. However, rather than trying to depict what they see around them in a realistic manner, these artists distill the naturalistic elements within our environment to basic forms and structures. Artists such as Jennifer Bartlett, John Himmelfarb, Alex Katz, and Donald Sultan, among others, create fascinating new patterns by simplifying and replicating nature's complex forms.
