Forged and Fabricated demonstrates the scope and nature of Paley’s impressive artistry and his technical mastery of contemporary metalworking methods. Paley gives initial shape and form to his ideas by drawing. He then makes small, three-dimensional sketches with paper, cardboard, or metal, often elaborating his designs in larger drawings, many of which serve as proposals for monumental commissions. Paley then works with his assistants to forge and/or fabricate the full-scale sculptures, some of which are more than fifty feet in height or width. The exhibition includes approximately 35 works from Paley’s personal collection that range from three to seven feet in height and weigh several hundred pounds. Many are studies for monumental public sculptures.
